Lilian Morsay is the Peace Mothers Coordinator at Fambul Tok International, Sierra Leone, where she works with networks of Local community women groups known as Peace Mothers to help in applying the voices of women in peace promotion and achieving sustainable development. She is responsible for facilitating the activities of peace mothers groups at Fambul Tok and is committed to working with rural community women to ensure that their rights are promoted and their voices are amplified in an African male-dominated cultural setting where women are often excluded from major decision making. After serving as a teacher for a couple of years, Lilian Fambul Tok in 2009 because of her burning desire and passion for contributing to the development of rural women and promoting sustainable peace and development.
As a native Kono woman from eastern Sierra Leone, Lilian can communicate fluently in her native Kono language, as well as Madingo, Kurankoh and Fullah. She stays up at night thinking about how rural women and girls should be truly liberated and empowered to be able to positively contribute to the development of their families and communities. She draws the greatest joy and satisfaction when she sees local women occupy leadership positions at both local and national levels and when she witnesses women contributing in discussions of community peace and development. Through the Peace Mothers work, women have gained recognition and promotion as local chiefs, financial managers, family heads, local councilors and members of parliament in the country. Lilian has been able to help women gain economic and financial independence by promoting agricultural food sufficiency and by contributing to multiple community projects including the construction of community produce stores, health facilities, and meeting halls.
Lilian is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Arts degree with the Institute of Public Administration and Management (IPAM), an affiliate of the University of Sierra Leone and she holds teaching certificates and has attended numerous short-term training courses. On weekends, Lilian can be found reading books, especially the Bible, listening to religious songs or music and engaging in gardening works.
